My husbands Great Grandfather Alexander Hagopian (listed as Agopian on ship manifest and draft card) immigrated from Paris France in 1898. He was originally from Turkish Armenia. We understand that Hagopian ia a patronymic name of Hagop...son of Jacob. We have also heard the meaning...climbing Jacob's ladder. Any information appreciated.

Armenian surnames are usually based on one of the following categories

1) Noble descent- Like Haykazuni, Rshtuni, Lusinian. Those are the direct descendants of the nobility who still carry their ancestral family name

2) Geographic Regions – Like Marashlian, Aintablian, and Sassounian. Name after the towns or villages in historical Armenia that they came from.

3) Ancestral first names - like Hovannisian, krikorian, and in your grandfather case, Hagopian.

4) Physical characteristic – Like Topalian (Topal = Crippled), Keroghlian (son of the blind) Brunsuzian (without a nose), Cholakhian (deformed hand). Those names are derived from actual physical characteristics of the person and usually have a Turkish or Arabic origin. Although not appealing as a nobility names but very common category.

5) Profession - Like Boyadjian (Painter), Kalajian (Copper Smith), Hadadian (Black Smith), Sayadjian (Shoe Maker). Again those names have Arabic or Turkish origin.

To answer your question, yes “ian” or “yan” at the end of an Armenian name means “son of” however not all Armenian names end with “ian” some of them end with “Oglu” a Turkish word also meaning “son of” and “uni” as in noble descent.

Hagop is translated to Jacob or James.

I hope this help.

Hagopian's real name was Haritoun Takoshian and Once Hagopian was assassinated outside his home in Athens' Palaio Faliro on April 28, 1988, while he was waiting for a taxi to take him to the airport for a flight to Belgrade. He was accompanied by his sister-in-law, who was not hurt.A Greek police official said two armed men got out of a parked car as Hagopian walked out of his apartment building, carrying his luggage. One of the two men opened fire with the sawed-off shotgun, wounding Hagopian in the chest and elbow. As Hagopian tried to flee, the killer ran after him and fired two more slugs into his head and chest. The attackers got away in a car left parked across the street.

Alexander Hagopian was my great grandfather. I have some information on him, but not much. Mostly just census forms and a few anecdotal bits of info. Is there anything is particular that you're looking for?flash player free download

The minority Armenian population in Turkiye (at the time known as the Ottoman Empire) was pushing for equal rights and coming under attack. The Ottoman Empire, already crumbling, started what would become the first genocide of the 20th century killing 1.5 million Armenians.
