Armenian Cemeteries

Hello group,

Tombstones can be a valuable piece of evidence in finding answers to our past. Any genealogical research would not be complete without referencing a tombstone or a graveyard.
We like to announce that we started the Armenian Tombstone Project. The purpose of this project is to collect any burial records for Armenians around the world and archive them in a database. These records will include the following:

• Name, Birth, Death information
  Name Of cemetery
  Location (Town, City, Country)
  Tombstone inscriptions
  Tombstone pictures

The tombstones of our ancestors were always meant to be lasting memorials to the lives of those gone before. We need to preserve this valuable information before they are lost.

We are looking for any information or ideas you might have to assist us in this project. At this time we are collecting information about various Armenian cemeteries around the world. (Name, Location and contact info if possible), once we have this information we can start with each graveyard and collect their tombstone information. If you would like to be a part of this project, please let us know. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The ashes of my great-aunt Lyuci Tarkyul are buried in the Tokhmakh cemetery in Yerevan.

not trying to be rude, but exactly what do you mean from your post.

My father was from Diarbekir; he has related the following information about his own father, Sarkis Dishtchekenian, b 1830, d1884 in Diarbekir. Possibly someone has some information about his burial place or tombstone. Sarkis was an importer, and relatively well off. He was instrumental in helping form a Protestant (Congregational) Church in Diarbekir, and he was highly regarded, partly for this reason. When he died, the Church made a great exception to the usual practice of only burying the dead outside the area or walls of the church or city (I'm not entirely clear on where), for sanitation reasons. However, because Sarkis was held in such high regard by the Church, he was buried, using much limestone for sanitation reasons, in the Church yard, and a tombstone was erected there. My dad assumed the Church has been destroyed or turned into a storage building by the Turks; Dad's mother and sister were never heard from after the Genocide. I've seen some references to the ruins of churches, so possibly someone on this forum has been to Diarbekir, and can give me some additional information.

A few years ago i found a video on youtube of a young group of teenage turkish boys and girls who stumbled across ancient armenian grave stones and vandalizing it well maliciously laughing in the camera for CNN Turk. I couldnt find the same video again. But I think it was a message to all Armenians.
